Geely’s Big Goal
Dongguan Guixiang Insulation Materials Co., Ltd. focuses on the design, development, and production of battery heating solutions for new energy vehicles.
Geely Automobile is fully outlining its new energy vehicle strategy for the first time, and its ambitious goals are striking: achieving a fuel consumption of 5.0L per 100 kilometers ahead of schedule; having new energy vehicle sales account for more than 90% of Geely’s total sales by 2020; realizing the transformation from traditional vehicles to new energy vehicles, and so on.
On November 18, Geely Automobile launched the Emgrand EV on the eve of the Guangzhou Auto Show (see: Geely Emgrand EV: 253 km range, starting from 120,800 yuan after subsidies), and officially announced its new energy vehicle development strategy — the ‘Blue Geely Initiative,’ outlining Geely Automobile’s goals and pathways for transitioning to
new energy vehicles.Five commitments for new energy vehicles
An Conghui, CEO and President of Geely Automobile Group, explained the core content of the ‘Blue Geely Initiative’ at the press conference, which includes five commitments:
1. Take the lead in committing to fully achieve the national Stage IV corporate average fuel consumption limit of 5.0L/100km ahead of schedule in 2020; 2. Make it possible for consumers to buy plug-in hybrid vehicles at the cost of purchasing conventional cars; 3. Achieve sales of new energy vehicles accounting for more than 90% of Geely’s total sales by 2020, with plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicles accounting for 65% and pure electric vehicles accounting for 35% (note: Geely’s definition of new energy vehicles differs from the central government’s policy, as the central policy excludes non-plug-in hybrid vehicles); 4. Make substantial progress in the research and development of hydrogen fuel and metal fuel cell vehicles; 5. Attain leading industry positions in new energy technologies, intelligentization, and lightweight technologies.
This is an ambitious goal. In a media interview following the press conference on the 18th, An Conghui stated that Geely did not start implementing its new energy vehicle strategy today. ‘Geely began developing hybrid technology 8 years ago, started researching pure electric vehicles 5 years ago, and began developing plug-in hybrid vehicles 3 years ago.’ In other words, Geely has already made sufficient technological preparations for this.
Geely has not disclosed its overall sales target for 2020. However, An Conghui indicated that achieving over one million new energy vehicle sales in 2020 “should definitely be expected.” Feng Qingfeng, Vice President of Geely Automobile Group and Director of the Automotive Research Institute, introduced the technological routes adopted by Geely in its transformation. Geely will evolve into a new energy vehicle company based on three technological routes: EV, PHEV, and HEV, relying on the high-end pure electric vehicle FE platform, the small dedicated pure electric vehicle PE, and the CMA mid-size modular vehicle architecture. The Geely Emgrand EV, which was launched on the same day, comes from the FE platform. This model already has a maximum range of 330 kilometers (urban economic conditions) and a comprehensive energy consumption of less than 16 kWh per 100 kilometers. Feng Qingfeng stated that according to plans, by 2018, the Emgrand EV will achieve a range of over 400 kilometers with an average energy consumption of less than 13 kWh per 100 kilometers; and by 2020, it will achieve a range of over 500 kilometers with an energy consumption of less than 11 kWh per 100 kilometers.
As for the pure electric vehicles developed on the small specialized pure electric vehicle PE platform, by 2020 they will achieve a driving range of over 400 kilometers, with a minimum energy consumption of about 8 kilowatt-hours per 100 kilometers.
Currently, Geely Auto has jointly established electric vehicle companies with Kandi Auto and Zhidou Auto, and the main models they produce and sell are also small pure electric vehicles. During a media interview following the press conference on the 18th, Geely Auto CEO An Conghui responded to questions about the relationship between the small electric vehicles produced on the Geely PE platform and those from Kandi and Zhidou. An Conghui stated that the small pure electric vehicles produced on the Geely PE platform are high-performance, long-range electric vehicles and are not competitors to the short- to medium-distance small electric vehicles.
The 1.5TD 7DCTH plug-in hybrid power system, developed by Geely’s Europe R&D Center based on the CMA mid-size car platform, will be equipped on all Geely models. In 2017, it will achieve a combined fuel consumption of under 2 liters per 100 kilometers, dropping to 1.8 liters in 2019, and by 2020, it aims to reach an industry-leading target of less than 1.5 liters per 100 kilometers. The CMA architecture, similar to Volkswagen’s modular production, can accommodate the needs of multiple models, matching corresponding body and powertrain requirements, thereby reducing costs and helping Geely fulfill its commitment to sell plug-in hybrid cars at the price of traditional vehicles. In 2017, Geely will launch plug-in hybrid models, and thereafter, the plug-in hybrid power system will be applied to all models across all Geely platforms.
The CHS hybrid power system is the result of 10 years of dedicated research by Geely Automobile and is a power split system with completely independent intellectual property rights. This hybrid system will be installed on Geely A-class to A+ class models and began mass production in 2016. In the first phase, a 40% fuel saving was achieved in 2016; in the second phase, a 45% fuel saving was achieved in 2018; and in the third phase, a 50% fuel saving was achieved in 2020.
Other alternative fuel technologies continue to receive investment
Geely Auto has previously made extensive arrangements in energy-saving and emission-reduction technology routes. In addition to hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric vehicles, Geely is also the first company to independently develop methanol vehicles and obtain national methanol vehicle production qualifications. An Conghui introduced that Geely’s methanol vehicles have already been piloted in Shanghai, Shaanxi, and Guizhou, among other places. In addition, Geely also develops and produces ethanol-powered vehicles, natural gas-powered vehicles, and more.
After finalizing Geely’s new energy vehicle strategy, An Conghui stated that Geely Auto will not give up on the market for these alternative fuel technologies and will continue to invest in research and development. Additionally, when responding to reporters’ questions, An Conghui also clarified that Geely Auto has no financing plans and will not raise funds following the announcement of its new energy vehicle strategy. Although the new energy vehicle sector requires significant investment, Geely Auto can maintain these investments with its own funds.
As the first high-performance pure electric vehicle launched following the introduction of the ‘Blue Geely Initiative,’ the Geely Emgrand EV was officially released on November 18. The new car is available in three configurations: Entry, Elite, and Premium, with prices ranging from 228,800 to 249,800 yuan. The Emgrand EV has a comprehensive driving range of 253 kilometers, and its range at a constant speed of 60 km/h can reach 330 kilometers.
Geely’s big goal: By 2020, new energy vehicles will account for 90% of its production, transforming into a new energy vehicle company (reprinted from China Electric Vehicle 100 Forum)
